A 32-year-old woman, Taquida Hendrix, is currently facing charges of murder and arson in connection with a tragic house fire that resulted in the death of a five-year-old boy named Malakai Stovall in Rochester, New York on August 1. The incident, which occurred on the morning of July 29, 2024, involved setting a fire on the front porch of the family home, where Malakai suffered severe burns and succumbed to his injuries three days later despite being put on a ventilator.
During the court proceedings on September 10, a witness, Toni Kendrick, who was babysitting Malakai at the time of the fire, described the chaotic scene as she attempted to rescue the boy from the second floor but was thwarted by the raging blaze. The jury listened to her distressing call to emergency services, pleading for urgent assistance while expressing her inability to reach the child due to the intensity of the fire.
Captain Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department highlighted the tragic outcome of the fire, stating that Malakai was trapped and ultimately killed by the flames, while two firefighters also sustained injuries in their rescue efforts. The city’s Mayor, Malik Evans, condemned the senseless act that led to the loss of a young life and the destruction of the family’s home.
Malakai, who was under the care of a babysitter as his parents were away, suffered extensive burns covering over 75% of his body and was rushed to the hospital following the incident. The duplex residence was completely destroyed by the fire, marking a devastating loss for the community. The ongoing trial is set to feature testimonies from thirty witnesses, with Hendrix’s sister and another individual already pleading guilty to arson charges in connection with the case.
