“Nina Dobrev and Shaun White Call Off Engagement”

Date:

Nina Dobrev, known for her role in the hit TV series Vampire Diaries, and Shaun White, the Olympic snowboarder, have decided to end their engagement and go their separate ways following a five-year relationship.

Their last public appearance together was on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, where they were spotted hand-in-hand running errands. However, Dobrev was seen without her 5-carat diamond engagement ring at the Eternity premiere during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7.

Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert in the CW vampire drama for six seasons, has removed her engagement announcement from her Instagram account, which had been pinned at the top since White’s proposal in October 2024.

According to reports from the Mirror US, Dobrev had initially shared the news with a post saying, “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé,” while White had posted, “She said YES.”

A close source revealed to PEOPLE that their decision to split was mutual, made with love and deep respect for each other.

White had various plans to propose to Dobrev, initially intending to do so during their summer vacation, but changed his plans after Dobrev injured her knee in a dirt-biking accident. Eventually, he proposed during an ordinary week in late October at The Golden Swan restaurant in New York City, carefully arranging every detail.

During their relationship, White discreetly moved Dobrev’s engagement ring around their house to keep it a secret, orchestrating a surprise proposal with the help of a fabricated invitation to a dinner event in New York City.

Their engagement was announced online several days after the proposal.

The couple first met briefly in 2012 at an awards ceremony but only connected in 2019 when both were speakers at an event hosted by Tony Robbins. White admitted he knew very little about Dobrev at the time and was surprised by the attention she received from staff members.

Their relationship began in 2019, and they moved in together during the COVID-19 pandemic. They went public with their romance in May 2020 when White shared photos of Dobrev cutting his hair during lockdown.

Throughout their five-year relationship, they were frequently seen supporting each other at events and in their respective careers. Dobrev cheered on White during his final Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022.
