A 20-year-old aspiring police officer experienced a sudden headache while watching the TV show “24 Hours in Police Custody” and subsequently suffered a stroke. Esther Littlewood, who had been preparing for the detective constable programme, faced this unexpected health scare despite considering herself physically fit and healthy. She had successfully completed the rigorous fitness tests required for police training and was eagerly anticipating the start of her course in August.
While watching “24 Hours in Police Custody” with her mother on June 29, Esther began complaining of a headache and decided to rest upstairs after taking paracetamol. However, her partner later found her unresponsive in bed, leading to her hospitalization after experiencing multiple seizures. Doctors diagnosed Esther with a stroke caused by a congenital heart condition called patent foramen ovale (PFO), which allowed a blood clot to reach her brain.
Fortunately, Esther recovered fully from the stroke but is now cautioning others about the potential dangers of undiagnosed health conditions. She emphasized her passion for joining the police force and the intense preparation she had undertaken for the physical demands of the role. Despite the unexpected turn of events, Esther remains determined to raise awareness about PFOs and strokes in young individuals, urging people to seek medical attention if they experience unusual headaches or symptoms.
