Yorkshire Family Builds Dream Home, Sells It to Travel

Date:

A family from Yorkshire built their own house and then sold it to travel the globe, finding a way to live luxuriously while cutting living costs in half. Danielle Booth and her husband Mike, 36, were inspired to explore the world after a memorable French road trip with their children, now aged 14 and 10, in 2019.

Mike, a joiner, constructed a four-bedroom detached home from scratch in 2020 with the intention of selling it to fund their travel dreams. After completing the renovation project three years later, the family diligently saved money by selling items on platforms like Vinted before selling their house in April.

Embarking on their journey on October 28, the family landed in Bangkok, Thailand, to kick off their adventure. Their budget for the trip, which they plan to extend for at least a year, is approximately £500 a week, sourced from the house sale proceeds and a modest income from Mike’s business in the UK.

Former NHS worker Danielle shared that the move has allowed them to live lavishly compared to their life in the UK, where their monthly expenses amounted to around £4,500. By relocating and reducing costs, they aim to provide their children with a diverse cultural education while cutting their expenses in half.

They expressed that leaving the UK was not an easy decision but highlighted the financial benefits and improved quality of life they have experienced abroad. The family is currently in Thailand and plans to visit Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan.

Danielle mentioned concerns about rising crime rates and dissatisfaction with the UK schooling system as additional reasons for their journey. They intend for their 14-year-old daughter to continue her studies online while engaging in cultural and fitness activities during their travels.

While some have questioned their choice to leave a seemingly comfortable life in the UK, Danielle emphasized the importance of spending quality time with their children and the stress relief they have found through their travels. They are content with their decision, enjoying the local cuisine and friendly atmosphere in their current location.
