“Virgin Media Advises: Keep Routers Cool for Consistent Internet”

Date:

Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to ensure consistent internet speeds throughout the year. While common advice includes placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal disruptions like fish tanks, it’s essential to note that weather changes can also impact performance.

As temperatures rise in late spring and summer, routers may face increased strain. To maintain optimal performance, it is crucial to keep routers in cool, well-ventilated areas.

Virgin Media explained in a recent blog post how warmer weather can affect broadband speeds, stating, “Hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors. While external equipment is designed for high temperatures, indoor routers may struggle if overheated.”

Routers require good airflow to function correctly. If placed in confined spaces, near heat sources, or in direct sunlight, routers can overheat, leading to slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic restarts to cool down during a heatwave.

To prevent performance issues due to heat, ensure your router is in a cooler location. While hot weather can impact performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt your internet activities.

Virgin Media emphasized that most weather-related broadband issues stem from indoor factors like wall thickness, device overload, and improper router placement, rather than external conditions.

For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your router in an open, central area away from direct sunlight, avoiding large metal objects or obstructions.

After severe weather, check cables for security and damage to ensure a stable connection. Additionally, reducing interference by limiting connected devices simultaneously can improve performance.
