Max Verstappen escapes penalty following scrutiny over an unusual incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The current Formula 1 champion faced investigation by stewards in Budapest for allegedly being released in an unsafe state during FP2.
Verstappen was seen throwing a Red Bull towel from his car onto the track while the session was ongoing, reminiscent of a previous occurrence at the Miami Grand Prix involving Lando Norris and items in his cockpit. McLaren and Norris were let off the hook that day after Norris promptly removed the items. Similarly, Verstappen received only a warning from F1 stewards.
A statement revealed that Verstappen unintentionally left the towel in the cockpit, which prompted him to dispose of it as far away from the car and track as possible to ensure safety. The stewards ruled that the towel posed a risk of interfering with Verstappen’s control of the car, leading to the decision to issue a warning to the team.
Verstappen clarified that he took precautions to eliminate the towel in a safe manner, ensuring it did not pose a danger during his drive. The stewards acknowledged his actions in handling the situation appropriately.
