“Unifor and General Motors Launch Labor Talks in Toronto”

Date:

Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, commencing negotiations at a downtown Toronto meeting on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock. Unifor national president Lana Payne and GM Canada’s president and managing director, Jack Uppal, inaugurated the talks with a handshake.

The negotiation room was set with chairs arranged on opposite ends, with Payne positioned in the center and Uppal directly across from her. Payne stated in a press release that they are building on the established foundation of the agreement with Ford and aim to engage in substantial discussions concerning GM’s operations and the future of automotive jobs in Canada.

Unifor has set a deadline of August 21 to reach a tentative agreement with GM. Uppal, in a separate press release, emphasized the company’s deep respect for the collective bargaining process and the crucial role played by its employees in its achievements. He highlighted recent investments amounting to $3.3 billion in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, securing future jobs and aiming for a mutually beneficial agreement to enhance competitiveness in the long term.

In a related development, Unifor members approved a new three-year contract with Ford in July, incorporating annual pay increases and program commitments at Ford facilities. The agreement also introduced a program to assist laid-off workers from Ford’s Oakville assembly plant in transitioning to full employment by 2027. Unifor described the negotiation with Ford as successful in setting patterns for future agreements.

As the bargaining process progresses with General Motors and other major automakers, challenges persist within the sector, including issues such as U.S. tariffs, trade uncertainties, and the impact of Chinese electric vehicles entering the Canadian market. Unifor remains committed to advocating for the industry’s interests amidst these headwinds.
