“UK’s Freely Set to Challenge Sky with Free TV Streaming”

Date:

Sky currently provides various options for streaming TV, such as its comprehensive Glass TV and compact Stream box that can be connected to any existing television. Offering access to a wide range of premium channels and personalized suggestions, Sky’s products stand out in the market. However, there is a new contender on the horizon that could challenge Sky’s dominance.

Freely, introduced last year, allows UK households to stream live TV for free through new TVs equipped with this service. By simply connecting these screens to the internet, viewers can access live channels via broadband instead of relying on an antenna.

Previously, this convenient way of accessing content required purchasing a new TV. Fortunately, a change is on the horizon. Freely, owned by the same team behind Freeview, is launching a new set-top box that will enable users to enjoy its platform on any existing TV in UK homes, directly competing with Sky’s Stream box.

Manufactured by Netgem, the device will be available for purchase later this year, offering complete access to over 40 live channels without the need for an antenna. Freely’s box will be equipped with a full TV guide, a Mini Guide displaying current and upcoming programs, personalized viewing recommendations, live TV pause functionality, and a seven-day backward and forward feature for accessing previously aired content.

Freely also pledges regular automatic updates to enhance features, channels, and content continually. Unlike Sky, once the device is bought, all viewing is free without any subscription fees required.

CEO of Everyone TV, Jonathan Thompson, expressed, “Freely was designed to make free TV accessible to everyone. Expanding to ‘plug-in and stream’ devices is a significant and logical progression to ensure more households can enjoy the complete Freely experience without needing to upgrade their TV or subscribe to a paid service.”

Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., added, “Netgem is excited to introduce the first Freely streaming device to the market in collaboration with Everyone TV. This innovation revolutionizes the viewing experience for those seeking seamless TV and entertainment delivered via Wi-Fi. The integration of Freely with Netgem’s entertainment service positions this streaming device as the top choice for all households, offering an affordable solution to rejuvenate all TV sets.”
