Supermarkets in the UK have issued a recall notice for a popular breakfast cereal due to the presence of an ingredient that could trigger severe allergic reactions.
Food safety officials have issued a warning not to consume Spoon Cereals’ Cinnamon and Pecan Granola as it may contain peanuts and oats, posing a risk to individuals with peanut or gluten allergies.
The manufacturer, Spoons Cereals, has announced a recall of 400g packets of the cereal with batch code M5244 and specific best before dates, including May 22, 2026, and May 26, 2026, after some products were mispackaged and may contain peanuts and gluten.
Individuals with peanut or gluten allergies, as well as those with coeliac disease, are advised not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Customers seeking more information can contact Spoon Cereals via email at spoon@spooncereals.co.uk.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that the business has issued a point-of-sale notice to customers, explaining the reason for the product recall and providing guidance for those who have purchased the affected product.
Coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition affecting around 1 in 100 people, prevents individuals from digesting gluten, leading to symptoms ranging from rashes to breathing difficulties. The disease damages the lining of the small bowel, affecting nutrient absorption.
Peanuts are among the 14 allergens mandated for declaration on packaging, with approximately 1 in 50 children and 1 in 200 adults in the UK having a nut allergy. Nut allergies can result in severe symptoms such as swelling and difficulty breathing.
Individuals experiencing symptoms after consuming the affected product are advised to seek immediate medical attention. In the UK, about 6% of adults, equating to around 2.4 million people, have confirmed food allergies, with even trace amounts of allergens capable of causing illness or death.
