Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with the frustrating issue of online congestion, particularly during peak hours in the evening when multiple households are simultaneously engaging in activities like streaming, downloading, and video calling. This surge in usage can overwhelm local networks, resulting in a noticeable slowdown in internet speeds.
Comparatively, broadband performance can be likened to a motorway – the more users on the network simultaneously, the slower the connection becomes. This is why many households experience a significant decline in internet speed between 7pm and 11pm.
A recent study by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most impacted by peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking as the most affected. The report shows that average download speeds in this area plummet from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a substantial 55% decrease.
Other regions heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
In contrast, some areas in the UK actually witness an improvement in internet speed during peak hours. Newport topped the list in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie highlighted the similarity between internet networks and congested roads, emphasizing that congestion can impact internet performance. The study, based on 144,509 broadband speed tests, identified locations where broadband performance fluctuates the most during peak times.
The report also noted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland showing overall improvement in broadband performance during the evening hours. Conversely, the South West experienced a decrease of approximately 15% in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Experts suggest various ways for households to enhance their home internet connection, such as placing the router in an open, central location away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
