“UK Steel Industry Secured with Tariff-Free EU Access”

Date:

Working in a steel mill is a challenging job that requires physical endurance and strength, shaping the resilient and proud steelworker communities. Growing up in South Wales, I witnessed my father’s dedication at Llanwern Steelworks, instilling in me a deep appreciation for the industry.

The UK has a rich steelmaking heritage, but uncertainties have clouded its future. Global steel overproduction and rising energy costs have posed challenges for British companies, leading to a tough trading environment. Steel prices have plunged while production costs have soared, further exacerbated by tariffs.

Fortunately, the recent government efforts have restored tariff-free access to the EU market for British construction-grade steel, a move that will significantly benefit the UK steel industry. With 37,000 workers employed in this sector, supporting numerous families nationwide, safeguarding the industry’s future is imperative.

By prioritizing UK communities, evidenced through strategic initiatives and international negotiations, the government aims to protect industries and jobs. These negotiations, though seemingly distant, have tangible impacts, saving industries millions and preserving employment opportunities.

As Minister for EU Relations, my focus is on fostering a cooperative and trustworthy partnership with our predominant trading partner. Unlike the adversarial approach advocated by some politicians, such as the Tories and Nigel Farage, we strive for a collaborative relationship that bolsters trade ties and safeguards British industries.

The strength of British steel, rooted in places like Scunthorpe and Port Talbot, highlights its enduring legacy across various towns and cities. Through pragmatic collaboration with the EU, we have injected vital support into this crucial UK industry, ensuring its sustainability and growth.
