Wes Streeting, currently serving as the Health Secretary, made a commitment upon assuming the position of Health and Social Care Secretary to enhance access to family doctors. This pledge aimed to alleviate the common issue of patients facing difficulties scheduling appointments before 8 am.
Through the government’s Plan for Change, significant progress has been achieved in fulfilling this promise. The initiative included streamlining bureaucratic processes to swiftly recruit 1,000 new General Practitioners (GPs), particularly focusing on young doctors facing unemployment while patients struggled to secure consultations.
Within a span of just 10 months, the target was surpassed with over 2,000 new GPs hired throughout England. Notably, a substantial portion of these healthcare professionals are serving in disadvantaged working-class neighborhoods that have historically suffered from inadequate funding and poor management.
Benefiting from these efforts, numerous individuals, including readers of the Mirror, have experienced improved healthcare accessibility. The increase in GP numbers has led to a rise in available appointments, enhancing patient care and instilling a sense of reassurance.
Recent statistics highlight the positive impact of these changes. A year ago, nearly 20% of patients encountered challenges contacting their GP. Presently, approximately 73% of patients rate their interaction with their practice as good or very good, as per an independent survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics.
