The government has successfully repatriated over 35,000 individuals who lacked legal status in the country, including more than 5,200 foreign national offenders since taking office. The enforcement of returns has reached its highest point since 2018, with a significant increase in the deportation of detainees compared to 2022. Efforts are being made to address the challenges left by the previous administration by closing all asylum hotels by the end of the current parliamentary term.
The number of asylum hotels has decreased from a peak of 400 in 2023, resulting in a substantial reduction in daily costs from £9 million to £5.5 million. Notably, the number of asylum seekers housed in hotels has been reduced by 16% in the first half of this year alone. Overall, asylum-related expenditures have decreased by 11%, leading to savings of nearly £1 billion from hotel expenses in the previous year.
To combat illegal migration effectively, the government is implementing various measures, including overhauling asylum appeals and establishing an independent body to expedite decision-making processes. The focus is on disrupting criminal syndicates, enhancing border security, and expediting the removal of individuals without legal rights in the UK.
International partnerships have been strengthened to combat organized immigration crime, with new agreements established with countries like Bulgaria, Romania, India, and Vietnam to enhance intelligence sharing and dismantle trafficking networks. Agreements such as the UK-France treaty have facilitated the detention and removal of illegal migrants, dealing a blow to smuggling operations.
Through initiatives like the Deport Now, Appeal Later scheme and collaborations with international partners, efforts are being made to streamline deportation processes and enhance border security. The government’s Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill aims to apply counterterrorism laws to combat organized immigration crime effectively.
By taking decisive action to increase deportations, crack down on illegal working, and enhance border controls, the government is committed to delivering lasting change and protecting the interests of the British public. This comprehensive approach aims to deter illegal migration, expedite asylum processes, and eliminate the need for asylum hotels by the end of the current parliamentary term.
