The upcoming year is expected to bring an increase in the TV licence fee, potentially exceeding £180, presenting a new financial challenge for numerous households amidst the rising cost of living.
Annually, the Government determines the TV licence fee, typically adjusting it every April in alignment with the previous September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.
With the confirmed September inflation rate at 3.8% this year, the current cost of a TV licence stands at £174.50 per year. If the fee increases by 3.8% in April, the new cost for a color TV licence is projected to be slightly above £181.
Although the specific hike is yet to be officially announced by the Government, it is noted that approximately 300,000 households ceased paying their TV licence fee in the previous year.
Owning a TV licence is a legal requirement for viewing live TV or content on catch-up or live platforms like BBC iPlayer. However, if your viewing is limited to streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, excluding live shows, a TV licence is not mandatory.
Certain individuals are eligible for free or discounted TV licences, such as those aged 75 and above receiving Pension Credit. Refunds may be applicable for individuals not requiring their TV licence before it expires, like when moving to a residence with an existing licence.
Residents in care facilities or sheltered housing may qualify for a discounted TV licence priced at £7.50 per room, flat, or bungalow. Additionally, households with a visually impaired member are entitled to a 50% discount on the TV licence fee.
Students living away from home can be covered under their parents’ TV licence if they watch TV on a non-mains powered device. Failure to comply with TV licensing regulations could result in fines up to £1,000, with a maximum penalty of £2,000 in Guernsey, plus potential legal costs and compensation orders.
