U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, emphasizing that removing him would be a significant mistake. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership during the recently concluded highly successful World Cup, stating that replacing him could lead to decreased success and profitability in the future.
Trump’s endorsement of Infantino followed critical statements from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF regarding Infantino’s involvement in a proposed sale of a stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights. The three confederations called for an independent review of Infantino’s actions, accusing him of breaching trust through deceptive practices and placing his interests above the collective good of football.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed doubts about Infantino’s leadership, citing concerns over recent events. Infantino faced strong opposition after his now-abandoned plan to sell a portion of the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors, a move that sparked widespread backlash within the football community.
UEFA, supported by AFC and CONCACAF, threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments unless assurances were given that similar proposals would not be considered in the future. The confederations emphasized the importance of leadership in football serving the sport’s best interests, calling for accountability and transparency in decision-making processes.
