Tragic Death of Scottish Triathlete in Swansea Heat Wave

Date:

A father, Sam Buchan, 31, from Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland tragically passed away after suffering from heat stroke during a triathlon swim in Swansea. The incident occurred in mid-July amid a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 28C. Sam was rescued from the water during the Ironman event and received immediate medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to exertional heat stroke-induced cardiac arrest three days later at Moriston Hospital in Swansea.

The coroner’s report attributed his death to exertional heat stroke leading to cardiac arrest. The inquest has been adjourned, with a full hearing scheduled for March 18 next year. Sam was lovingly remembered by his family as a devoted husband and father to Ella.

Described as a cherished son, brother, and friend, Sam participated in the Ironman event, which included a 1.2-mile swim at Prince of Wales Dock and a 56-mile bike ride through scenic routes in Swansea. Ironman Wales expressed their condolences and gratitude to the rescue team for their swift response in assisting Sam during the event.
