Toto Wolff believes that Lewis Hamilton’s final years with Ferrari will not define his legacy. The 40-year-old British driver is aiming to secure an eighth drivers’ title before retiring from Formula 1 with the Italian team.
Despite his ambitions, Hamilton’s debut season with Ferrari has been challenging, as he has yet to secure a podium finish in a Grand Prix race, although he did win a sprint race in Shanghai earlier in the year.
Hamilton’s reputation as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history is already well-established. With 105 Grand Prix victories, he stands as one of only two seven-time champions alongside Michael Schumacher, surpassing the German’s win count by 14.
Most of Hamilton’s success came during his 12-year tenure with Mercedes, where he won six additional titles after joining the team in 2013. Wolff, who served as his team principal throughout these victories, emphasized that Hamilton’s career achievements are not overshadowed by his time at Ferrari.
Wolff highlighted Schumacher’s winless period with Mercedes towards the end of his career as an example that such phases do not diminish past accomplishments. He stated that Hamilton’s Ferrari stint will not define his career in the long run.
Despite struggling to adapt to his new team, Hamilton remains determined to excel. Wolff expressed confidence in Hamilton’s abilities, emphasizing that the driver’s move to Ferrari was a mutual decision driven by the desire for change and competitiveness.
