Tommy Fleetwood Pursues First Major Amid Prize Money Mix-Up

Date:

Tommy Fleetwood missed out on £120,000 in prize money following his T12 finish at The Open Championship in 2018. The 34-year-old English golfer is still pursuing his first major victory after placing T16 at Royal Portrush last week.

Although not a contender, Fleetwood shot seven-under par, while Scottie Scheffler dominated from the start and clinched his first Claret Jug with a four-shot lead.

Having previously been a runner-up in 2019, Fleetwood has earned a significant sum from the Open, contributing to his impressive career earnings of £23.1 million. However, there was a mix-up in the past when his winnings were mistakenly sent to an American man named Thomas Fleetwood.

Thomas Fleetwood, a club professional from Florida, attempted to contact the English golfer to rectify the error. The PGA Tour star was more puzzled than upset by the situation and expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved by the European Tour.

Acknowledging the mix-up, Greg Thorner, who shared Thomas’s bank account screenshot, confirmed the error and the subsequent actions taken to return the money. The European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour, issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the clerical mistake.

Fleetwood is expected to receive £137,535 for his recent performance at the Open and hopes for a smooth transaction this time around.
