Tom McKibbin Eyes Masters and Open Spots After Hong Kong Open Triumph

Date:

LIV Golf sensation Tom McKibbin credits his record-breaking 60 at the Hong Kong Open to his aspiration of securing spots in the Masters and the Open. Despite advice from Rory McIlroy to join the Saudi-backed tour earlier this year, McKibbin, 22, opted to stick with his current path after a successful season finishing in the top 10 in the Race to Dubai and gaining a PGA Tour card.

Having earned over $5.7 million in his first LIV season and ranking 109th globally, McKibbin now seeks to qualify for the Majors next year by excelling at events like the Hong Kong Open, which not only features a $2 million prize fund but also offers coveted spots at Augusta and Royal Birkdale to top performers.

Expressing his motivation, McKibbin highlighted the significance of such opportunities, stating, “For these events to have those spots up for grabs, they definitely motivate you to go out and play well, knowing what’s sort of on the table come the end of the week.”

Since turning professional in 2021, McKibbin has made his mark in the golf world, notably becoming the youngest Irish winner on the DP World Tour at the 2023 Porsche European Open. Despite concerns from McIlroy about missing out on Major tournaments, McKibbin remains focused on his current path and the valuable experience gained from consistent play on the tour.

The Hong Kong Open, hosting 33 LIV players, including past champions like Patrick Reed and Charl Schwartzel, serves as a crucial platform for players aiming to secure prestigious tournament berths. With upcoming events like the Australian Open and the South African Open also offering Masters qualifications, the competition remains fierce among LIV Golf participants.

Moreover, the Hong Kong Open contributes to the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, where the leading player will secure an invitation to LIV Golf, further highlighting the significance of this prestigious tournament in the golfing calendar.
