“Tips to Lower Energy Costs This Winter”

Date:

Households are experiencing increased energy costs, but there are ways to reduce these expenses. Currently, the Ofgem price cap stands at £1,755 annually for the average household paying via direct debit, with an upcoming rise to £1,758 starting in January. This adjustment coincides with the colder months when heating usage typically peaks.

To mitigate costs, Ofgem recommends considering a fixed energy tariff, which locks in rates for a specified period. An analysis by moneysavingexpert.com reveals that the cheapest fixed tariff on the market is over 10% lower than the current price cap. Additionally, tracker tariffs offer rates that fluctuate based on wholesale energy prices.

For those facing extra financial burdens this winter, particularly the elderly or low-income individuals, support schemes like the Warm Home Discount can provide relief. Eligible participants may receive £150 off their electricity bill directly applied or as a voucher for prepayment customers. Moreover, Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300 are available for pensioners born before September 22, 1959, with higher earners required to repay the amount through taxes.

Cold Weather Payments of £25 are issued during prolonged periods of freezing temperatures. Simple energy-saving practices such as powering off standby appliances, avoiding kettle overfilling, and adjusting the thermostat can yield significant savings. In case of financial strain, contacting your energy provider for assistance options like payment plans or debt repayment arrangements is advisable.

Vulnerable customers can benefit from enrolling in the Priority Services Register for enhanced support during emergencies and power outages. Sealing draughts in your home, such as with draught excluders, can reduce heat loss and energy consumption. Draught-proofing measures can save around £85 annually, with potential eligibility for boiler grants or insulation assistance through schemes like the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) for low-income households.
