Date:

The Chief of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, Kele Antoine, expressed the profound impact of a recent shooting incident in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., where one individual sustained injuries. Antoine emphasized the tight-knit nature of the small community, highlighting the interconnectedness and empathy among its residents. He called on community members with any information regarding the incident to step forward, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed alongside law enforcement.

According to the RCMP, the incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. when a man was reportedly shot in a residential backyard. The injured individual received initial treatment at the local health center before being transferred to Yellowknife for further medical care. Authorities stated that the shooting seemed to be targeted and assured that an investigation, involving support from Yellowknife RCMP and other agencies, is currently underway.

While law enforcement assured the public that there is no immediate danger, Antoine suggested a possible link to drug-related activities, a claim not officially verified by the RCMP. He emphasized the necessity for sustained funding and adequate resources for local RCMP to effectively combat violence in the community. Antoine stressed the importance of a continuous effort to address the drug trade and prevent future violent incidents, advocating for long-term strategies beyond short-term responses following specific events.
