A waste collector has provided clear advice on the proper disposal of empty crisp packets and chocolate wrappers. The UK consumes over eight billion crisp packets annually, a number projected to exceed 11 billion by 2030. This equates to more than 30 million packets daily.
As one of the top five chocolate-consuming nations globally, the UK also generates a significant volume of chocolate wrappers. Despite advancements in food packaging recycling, there remains a challenge in recycling crisp and chocolate wrappers due to their multi-layered composition of polypropylene, polyethylene, and aluminum coating, categorized as “soft plastics.” While many local authorities collect hard plastics for recycling, the infrastructure for recycling soft plastics at scale is not yet widespread.
Recycling policies vary among UK councils, with some able to recycle soft plastics. Individuals are advised to check with their local council on recycling capabilities. The renowned TikTok figure “The No1 Binman” (known as Ashley) emphasizes that crisp packets and chocolate wrappers should not be placed in regular recycling bins. Instead, individuals can recycle crisp packets at supermarkets, as many stores offer dedicated bins for this purpose. Otherwise, these items can be disposed of in general waste bins.
In a separate incident in 2023, historic crisp packets from the 1960s were found on a Norfolk beach, underscoring the long-lasting impact of plastics on the environment.
