Teenager and Mayor’s Assassin Found Dead After Drug Cartel Murder

Date:

Two bodies, including that of a teenager, have been discovered by the roadside in connection with the murder of a mayor who was leading efforts against drug cartels. Carlos Manzo, aged 40, from Uruapan, located approximately 251 miles west of Mexico City, was fatally shot in a crowded central square during Day of the Dead festivities. Shortly after, 17-year-old Miguel Angel Ubaldo Vidales, linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was identified and killed by authorities, with an ongoing investigation into the incident.

The mayor had requested additional support from the central government in Mexico to combat drug-related crimes, while Ubaldo Vidales was found to have ties to the cartel. The shooter, who targeted the mayor with six gunshots, had been reported missing from his residence for about a week.

Governor Alfedo Ramirez Bedolla has confirmed that the two individuals found slain on the road from Uruapan to Paracho, near Capacuaro, were accomplices of the individual who murdered the mayor. Ramirez Bedolla stated that two others were involved in the assassination, and their bodies were discovered in Capácuaro. One of them was 16 years old, according to the information verified with the Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch.

Ramirez Bedolla expressed concern about the recruitment of teenagers by cartels in Michoacan, where crime has escalated in recent months, affecting the avocado industry in Uruapan, with farmers facing extortion from criminal groups.

An investigation is ongoing into the events of the fatal attack, despite the mayor having eight private bodyguards and 14 police officers protecting him. Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the death of Ubaldo Vidales after being detained by the police, followed by a fatal gunshot.

Ramirez Bedolla mentioned the investigation into the shooting of the apprehended killer, highlighting a struggle that resulted in a fatal shot. The discovery of the assassins’ two accomplices also presents a new angle for detectives to explore.

Meanwhile, Carlos Manzo’s widow, Grecia Quiroz, was sworn in before the State Congress to succeed her husband as mayor, pledging to continue his initiatives. Quiroz emphasized that although Carlos Manzo had been killed, his legacy and impact on the community would endure.
