A teenager who fatally assaulted a two-year-old girl out of frustration while babysitting her on his 15th birthday has been released from incarceration. Karl McCluney carried out a violent attack on Demi Leigh Mahon, causing severe brain damage due to 68 injuries, at a residence in Eccles, Salford, in July 2008. The toddler was kept on life support for two days before her parents made the difficult decision to turn it off. McCluney was convicted of murder in July 2009 at Liverpool Crown Court and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
During his sentencing, Judge Mr Justice Sweeney described the assault as “savage,” highlighting McCluney’s anger towards having to babysit on his birthday without any celebration. The judge recounted how Demi Leigh’s crying triggered McCluney’s escalating anger, leading to a prolonged assault where he repeatedly struck the defenseless child, who stood no chance against his force due to her small size.
Following a parole hearing that included testimonies from mental health professionals and social workers, 31-year-old McCluney, whose sentence ended in April 2024, was granted release. The Parole Board noted his deep remorse and shame for the harm caused to the victim’s family. They also acknowledged his progress in managing emotions and behavioral issues, leading to a decision that further imprisonment was no longer necessary for public safety.
As part of his release conditions, McCluney will have to adhere to specific terms, including residing at a designated address, observing a curfew, and maintaining distance from Demi Leigh’s family to prevent contact.
