A global coalition of soccer supporter groups initiated a petition on Thursday demanding the resignation of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president following his proposal to sell future World Cup revenues to private investors. The petition, labeled InfantinOut, also advocates for a complete overhaul of FIFA to prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to the petition, Infantino’s controversial attempt to commercialize the World Cup by involving private investors was condemned as a betrayal of football. Despite facing severe backlash, Infantino eventually retracted the proposal.
Among the signatories of the petition are Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 national fan organizations globally.
Infantino has rebuffed calls to step down despite UEFA expressing no confidence in him. Criticism has also come from CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation leadership. The petition accuses Infantino of failing in leadership, lacking transparency, and eroding trust in FIFA.
The petition highlights Infantino’s past controversial initiatives, including support for the failed European Super League and advocating for biennial World Cups. It concludes by urging Infantino to resign for the credibility of FIFA and the future of the sport.
