“Sky Glass vs. Freely: Streaming Services Battle for Viewer Attention”

Date:

The trend of streaming services gaining traction is evident as companies compete to attract households away from traditional TV viewing methods. Sky recently introduced its new Glass TV, featuring enhanced display quality, simple setup, and improved sound through its integrated speakers and soundbar.

Unlike older systems, Sky Glass operates without the need for a satellite dish, delivering content directly to its high-definition 4K screen via the internet.

While Sky Glass offers premium television experiences, users must subscribe to a monthly plan to access its services. However, for those hesitant to commit to a long-term subscription, there is now an alternative way to stream both live and on-demand content for free.

Launched last year, Freely provides an easy and free method to access entertainment online. Similar to Sky Glass, it eliminates the need for traditional aerial connections, offering built-in channel tuning capabilities.

Initially lagging behind Sky Glass in terms of channel variety and features, Freely has been continuously improving. The service, managed by the team responsible for Freeview, has recently announced significant upgrades.

Freely will soon be available on a broader range of smart TVs, including models from Philips and JVC, in addition to existing partnerships with Amazon Fire TVs, Bush, Hisense, and others. Moreover, Freely is enhancing user experience through three key updates, including a Backwards TV Guide allowing viewers to catch up on past content.

Another feature, Never Miss, provides curated recommendations for upcoming and aired shows, adapting to user preferences over time. Additionally, a new function called My List enables Freely users to save up to 50 favorite shows from major UK broadcasters for easy access.

Sarah Milton, Co-Chief Product Officer at Freely, highlighted the platform’s commitment to enhancing viewers’ live and on-demand TV experiences with the new features. She emphasized Freely’s continuous evolution, offering unique free-to-access premium features not found on other streaming services. With the expansion to more smart TVs, Freely aims to provide an enhanced free streaming experience to a wider audience.
