Sir Ian McKellen had to cancel his appearance at the Toronto Film Festival on medical advice, raising concerns about his well-being. The renowned actor, aged 86, was scheduled to attend the festival for the debut of his latest movie, The Christophers. However, due to doctor’s orders, he only made a virtual appearance through a pre-recorded message. McKellen explained that his doctors advised against flying, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing his health.
The film, featuring McKellen alongside James Corden, Jessica Gunning, and Michaela Coel, is a dark comedy portraying the offspring of a deceased artist who left some of his artworks unfinished. In the movie, the children opt to engage a forger to complete the pieces for potential sale.
The production of The Christophers took place earlier this year, marking McKellen’s first project post his unfortunate on-stage accident at the West End in June 2024. Following a fall during a performance of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, McKellen sustained injuries including a chipped vertebra and fractured wrist, leading to his hospitalization and withdrawal from the play.
Expressing regret for disappointing theatergoers, McKellen acknowledged the gravity of the situation, mentioning his limited time left. He assured his fans of a full recovery but stressed the need to refrain from work for the upcoming weeks to facilitate healing.
Despite missing the Toronto event, McKellen is set to return to the National Theatre for a special one-night appearance in December. Alongside Jim Carter and Dame Judi Dench, the acclaimed actor will discuss his illustrious career in theater and film. Anticipating the event, McKellen conveyed his excitement, looking forward to engaging with his audience.
