Andriy Shevchenko emphasized the importance of coming together “to stand against malevolent forces” ahead of Ukraine’s match against France marking the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
On November 13, 2015, a wave of shootings and bombings resulted in 130 fatalities and over 400 injuries, including a fatality at the Stade de France. The attacks included three suicide bombers who detonated their explosives when denied entry to the stadium during a match between France and Germany, with the Islamic State claiming responsibility.
Subsequently, Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to Shevchenko, the former AC Milan and Chelsea striker, assuming the presidency of the Ukrainian FA. Prior to the World Cup qualifier, Shevchenko stressed that the game held more significance beyond football, especially in light of heightened security measures.
Reflecting on the tragic events, Shevchenko expressed solidarity with the French people, highlighting the shared understanding Ukrainians have of the devastating impact of unjust terrorist acts. He underscored the necessity of uniting against evil forces to safeguard lasting peace and democratic prosperity.
Returning to Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022, Shevchenko assumed the role of FA president in January of the previous year. He articulated his commitment to supporting Ukraine comprehensively, emphasizing his dedication to preserving the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
Raised in a patriotic environment, with his father serving as a tank officer in the Red Army, Shevchenko’s allegiance lies with Ukraine. Following the outbreak of war, his focus shifted to ensuring Ukraine’s continued existence as a sovereign state, particularly in the face of Russia’s aggression challenging their autonomy.
Looking ahead to the World Cup qualifiers, Shevchenko highlighted the significance of Ukraine’s potential qualification, citing the opportunity to showcase the country on the global stage and the positive impact it would have on Ukrainian football development.
Ukraine, under the guidance of former Tottenham Hotspur forward Sergiy Rebrov, is currently positioned second in Group D behind France. They are gearing up for a crucial match against Iceland, which could determine their qualification for the World Cup.
