A Saskatchewan man is facing charges related to the alleged fraudulent branding of cattle, shedding light on the crucial role played by the only livestock investigator with the Saskatchewan RCMP.
Cpl. Owen Third assumed this specialized position in 2023 following over 18 years of service with the RCMP. Third emphasizes the importance of educating producers while supporting detachments across the province, where resources and expertise may be lacking.
In his capacity, Third handles criminal investigations, collaborating with Livestock Services of Saskatchewan (LSS) in enforcing the Animal Production Act and providing livestock inspection and identification services. Jason Pollock, CEO of LSS, commends Third for his invaluable contribution, bringing consistency and dedication to the role.
The recent charges stemmed from a tip received by LSS regarding altered cattle brands at a farm in the rural municipality of Martin, located around 225 kilometers east of Regina. A thorough investigation involving brand inspectors from LSS revealed that out of 197 inspected cattle, 99 bore altered brands over the original ones, while the rest were fraudulently branded anew.
Third, who is one of only four RCMP livestock investigators nationwide, refrained from commenting directly on the ongoing investigation but hinted at complex circumstances underlying the case. As the legal process unfolds, more details are expected to emerge.
According to Pollock, the volume of referrals and complaints in Saskatchewan ensures a busy schedule for LSS and Third throughout the year, despite the relatively low number of instances. The financial impact of these incidents remains substantial for the parties involved.
