“Sainsbury’s Bank Discontinues Credit Card App for 1.8M Customers”

Date:

Sainsbury’s Bank will discontinue its credit card app for customers starting next month. The bank, which transferred its banking services, including credit cards, loans, and savings, to NatWest last year, impacting 1.8 million customers, announced that the credit card app will cease functioning from 5pm on October 3. Account transfers to NatWest will occur between October 3 and 6, with affected customers receiving detailed information in written notifications from Sainsbury’s Bank, as reported by The Sun.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Sainsbury’s Bank reassured customers that there are no immediate changes requiring action at the moment. The bank will provide ongoing updates to customers throughout the transfer process.

Sainsbury’s Bank had previously disclosed its decision to wind down its banking division in January the previous year to focus on its retail business. In June 2024, NatWest agreed to acquire the bank, with the deal involving the transfer of £1.4 billion of unsecured personal loans, £1.1 billion of credit card balances, and around £2.6 billion of customer deposits.

Furthermore, Sainsbury’s Bank had earlier announced the discontinuation of new savings account applications for both new and existing customers. Applications submitted before March 13, 2025, will still be processed as usual. The bank has also divested its travel money services to Fexco Group in July 2025, while its pet insurance business remains unaffected by the NatWest transaction.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s CEO, emphasized the alignment of NatWest’s values and customer-centric approach with theirs, ensuring continued quality service for existing financial services customers. Paul Thwaite, NatWest Group CEO, highlighted the anticipated benefits of the transaction for customers, emphasizing the seamless integration process and the enhancement of credit card and personal lending services within their risk parameters.
