“Rare Carnivorous Plant Found in Arctic Raises Climate Concerns”

Klaus Koehler, an enthusiast of plants, came across a rare species while exploring Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. The discovery of bladderwort, a weed-like plant seldom seen in the Arctic, has raised concerns about the potential impact of invasive species in Northern regions as temperatures rise.

Koehler retrieved a sample of bladderwort from a pond in the park, noting its inconspicuous appearance to the untrained eye. Covered in small black bladder-like structures containing partially digested flies, this carnivorous plant is typically found farther south and rarely ventures into the tundra.

The last known occurrence of bladderwort in the area was documented in 2012 when researchers found samples near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. During their expeditions to the Arctic, the team identified over 30 previously undocumented plant species in the region.

The emergence of non-native plants in the Arctic is viewed by Koehler as a possible indicator of climate change. While the Arctic has historically had limited invasive species due to its harsh climate, the warming conditions are now creating a more favorable environment for plants not commonly found in the area. This shift is expected to impact the ecosystem significantly, with both invasive and native species likely expanding their ranges into the Arctic.

Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares these concerns, having been involved in the 2012 study that identified bladderwort in the region. The introduction of plant seeds by birds, cargo ships, and visitors to the Arctic poses a risk of invasive species outcompeting native flora, similar to the situation observed in other parts of Canada, such as the invasion of phragmites in Ontario.

While the discovery of bladderwort in Iqaluit by Koehler is not anticipated to have immediate detrimental effects, the potential invasion of other species remains a critical issue. A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 highlighted over 2,500 species with the capacity to invade the Arctic ecosystem, posing a threat to native biodiversity.

Koehler intends to submit a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort to the Museum of Nature for further examination, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the plant’s northward expansion. This collaborative effort between enthusiasts and researchers is crucial in monitoring and managing the changing botanical landscape in the Arctic.
