“Rare ‘Almost Blood Moon’ Eclipse Wows Skywatchers”

Date:

Skywatchers in the Americas, Europe, and Africa were treated to a spectacular sight as a partial lunar eclipse, known as the “almost blood moon,” unfolded on Thursday evening into Friday. At its peak just after midnight ET, the eclipse covered 96 percent of the moon’s visible surface in Earth’s shadow, creating a near-total lunar eclipse. This event was a rare occurrence, as the next lunar eclipse is not expected until New Year’s Eve in 2028.

In Canada, observers in various cities witnessed the full moon during different phases of the eclipse, capturing stunning images of the celestial event. In Vancouver, the moon was framed between buildings, while in Winnipeg, Osborne Village provided a picturesque backdrop for the partial lunar eclipse. Toronto’s R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant also offered a unique vantage point for skywatchers to witness the lunar spectacle.

Across the Americas, individuals gathered at iconic locations to view the partial lunar eclipse. At the George Observatory in Texas, a person captured the event on a cellphone, while in Washington, D.C., the eclipse was seen behind the Washington Monument. The golden edge of the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans provided a stunning setting for the lunar eclipse, and in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the moon rose above the Mexican flag during the celestial event. In Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil, the moon peeked behind a coconut palm tree during the eclipse.

In Europe, the partial lunar eclipse was observed in various cities, including Warsaw and London. People gathered at Parliament Hill in Hampstead Heath to witness the celestial display, while in Lisbon, a plane approached for landing against the backdrop of the moon. Goutz, France, also offered a stunning view of the reddish partial lunar eclipse in the night sky.

Overall, the partial lunar eclipse captivated skywatchers across continents, providing a rare opportunity to witness the moon’s journey through Earth’s shadow.
