“Protect Your Garden from Storms; Repurpose Tights!”

Date:

The recent inclement weather is a strong reminder to tend to your garden promptly to protect plants from potential damage caused by strong winds and heavy rains, like those brought by Storm Claudia.

Here’s a clever gardening tip: before tossing out old worn-out tights, repurpose them to secure climbing roses and shield them from wind-related harm. Simply use the nylon tights to create a figure-eight tie between the stem and its support. This simple technique not only safeguards your plants but also reduces waste going to landfills, a win-win situation.

In other gardening news, the Liriope ‘Okina’ or Lily Turf has been particularly delightful this week. This resilient plant thrives in shady areas and produces beautiful violet-purple flower spikes during early autumn. Its grass-like foliage, especially in the ‘Okina’ variety with unique leaves that transition from white to green, adds a charming touch to any garden. Plant them in moist soil under full or partial shade for optimal growth.

Carnivorous plants, known for their ability to attract and consume insects, captivate many, especially children, with their intriguing feeding habits. The Venus flytrap, a well-known carnivorous plant, traps its prey by swiftly closing its serrated leaves upon detecting an insect, initiating a slow digestive process that lasts about a week before expelling the remains of the prey.

These plants resort to consuming insects due to the lack of essential nutrients in their natural habitat, typically nutrient-deficient boggy soils. To care for carnivorous plants effectively, replicate their original environment by providing acidic moist soil and using rainwater instead of tap water to avoid damaging their delicate nature. During the growing season, ensure their roots remain moist by placing them in a tray with water.

For Venus flytraps, an unheated greenhouse with open windows or a sunny indoor spot is suitable, while Sarracenias, also known as pitcher plants, offer an ornamental addition to boggy gardens with their tubular leaves that lure insects into their deadly traps. Other carnivorous plants like Common butterwort and Bladderwort have unique mechanisms to catch their prey, showcasing the diverse and fascinating world of meat-eating plants.

Despite their macabre feeding habits, carnivorous plants are not only captivating and beautiful but also easy to cultivate, making them an excellent way to introduce both adults and children to the wonders of plant life.
