Prince Harry has made a surprise visit to Ukraine to show his support for the country’s injured individuals, right after his recent trip to the UK. Instead of heading to Los Angeles as expected, the Duke of Sussex, aged 40, decided to take an overnight train to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. He expressed his willingness to assist in any way possible after being invited by a charity leader.
Accompanied by a team from the Invictus Games Foundation, Prince Harry, known for his dedication to wounded veterans, is planning to introduce new programs to aid in rehabilitation efforts. The Foundation aims to extend its support to all regions of the war-affected nation, where an estimated 130,000 people have sustained permanent disabilities.
During a conversation with The Guardian on the train, Prince Harry emphasized the importance of aiding the recovery process for individuals impacted by the war. He stressed the need to humanize the experiences of those involved in the conflict and keep the public informed about the ongoing situation. The Prince mentioned that he was invited to Ukraine by Olga Rudnieva, the CEO of the Superhumans Trauma Centre in Lviv, a facility that caters to war-wounded veterans, particularly amputees.
While acknowledging that he cannot end the war, Prince Harry was advised by Ms. Rudnieva that visiting the capital city would have a significant impact. Before confirming the trip, he consulted with his wife, Meghan Markle, and the British government, eventually receiving an official invitation. The Prince expressed his anticipation for witnessing the actual devastation caused by the war, contrasting it with his previous experiences in Lviv.
In the upcoming days, Prince Harry is scheduled for a series of official engagements during his second packed visit within a week. These include a visit to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, spending time with 200 veterans, and a meeting with Ukrainian PM Yulia Svyrydenko.
