The primary suspect linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has made a plea for police protection upon his upcoming release. Christian Brueckner is set to be freed next week with no arrangements for a prison transfer beforehand, as confirmed by his lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher.
Fuelscher stated that Brueckner is currently detained at Sehnde Correctional Facility and is scheduled for release on September 17, 2025. He clarified that there have been no premature releases or plans for relocation to a different facility.
In the interest of Brueckner’s safety and maintaining order, the defense has reached out to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice for protective measures, awaiting a response. Close coordination with the police station is ongoing to ensure Brueckner’s security.
The individual, currently incarcerated in Sehnde prison in Germany, is serving a seven-year sentence for assaulting an elderly woman in the town where Madeleine went missing. Recently, a journalist who interviewed Brueckner in prison observed a lack of remorse regarding his crimes.
According to journalist Ulrich Oppold, Brueckner showed no regret for his past actions and expressed no need for rehabilitation. During the interview, Brueckner remained composed when asked about remorse, declining to answer and denying any sense of guilt or regret.
Brueckner, identified as the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case in 2020, has not been formally charged and refutes any involvement in her disappearance. German authorities are investigating his potential connection to the case, with evidence suggested by chief prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, although a definitive guilty verdict remains uncertain.
Wolters emphasized that Brueckner is not just a suspect but the sole individual under investigation for the case.
