Poundland has made an announcement today regarding the postponement of 11 store closures that were initially part of its restructuring plan. The discount retailer had previously stated its intention to shut down 68 stores after being acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal fee. However, Poundland has now disclosed that 11 of these planned closures have been temporarily halted.
Among the locations no longer facing closure is Poundland’s Irvine Rivergate Centre store, which was scheduled to permanently shut on September 14. The store has since reopened, as reported by The Mirror. Additionally, planned closures in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) for October have also been put on hold.
A separate closure set for a Whitby store has been canceled after Poundland reached an agreement with the landlord. The company maintains its expectation that the number of stores will decrease to approximately 650 to 700 as leases expire, down from the initial 800 branches at the start of the restructuring process.
Six stores are still slated for closure on September 28 in Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley, and Uttoxeter. These closures are part of the original list of 68 stores marked for shutdown. Poundland’s managing director, Barry Williams, emphasized the commitment to providing customers with great value and expressed confidence in the company’s future.
Poundland is introducing a new pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 for its UK stores, simplifying the cost of grocery items. The majority of products will be priced at £1, with some at £2 and £3. The company has also updated its website to focus on product browsing only, discontinuing online purchasing. The Poundland Perks loyalty app is also being closed, with existing vouchers valid until January 15, 2026.
