“Popular Kids’ Channels Pop and Tiny Pop to be Removed from TV Lineup”

Date:

Viewers who rely on Sky, Freeview, or Virgin Media for their entertainment will soon have fewer options on their TV screens. Two popular children’s channels, Pop and Tiny Pop, are set to be removed from the lineup starting next month, impacting millions of households that enjoy shows like Pokémon, LEGO Friends, and Hello Kitty.

The decision to discontinue these free-to-view channels, known for their content tailored to young audiences, is driven by commercial considerations. Paul Dunthorne, MD of Narrative, explained that the diminishing commercial viability of children’s TV in the UK led to the closure of the linear Pop channel by the year’s end.

However, despite the channels going off-air, the content will still be accessible through online platforms known as FAST channels. This shift to online-only services will require households to have internet-enabled TVs to continue viewing the content.

In addition to the channel closures, the Pop Player app and website will also be shut down. On a positive note, Sky has announced the upcoming launch of Disney Jr., a new kids’ TV channel featuring popular shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends, and Bluey.

Scheduled to debut on November 13 as part of the Sky Kids package, Disney Jr. will be available on various Sky devices and the Sky Go app. Viewers can also access Disney Jr. content on Disney+ for continued entertainment options.
