“Overland Flood Watch Issued for SW Manitoba”

Date:

An overland flood watch has been issued for parts of southwestern Manitoba due to heavy rainfall expected to persist through Saturday. The province’s hydrologic forecast center announced the watch, predicting widespread rainfall of 20 to 40 millimeters across much of southwestern Manitoba, extending north toward the Dauphin area.

The most intense rainfall is anticipated west of Brandon, particularly in Virden and Melita, with these areas potentially receiving 50 to 80 millimeters of rain. Some regions could experience up to 120 millimeters from severe thunderstorms, increasing the risk of overland flooding.

The heavy rainfall may also extend towards the Saskatchewan area of the Souris River basin, as reported by the province. Environment and Climate Change Canada released special weather statements for various western Manitoba regions, including areas around Dauphin and Riding Mountain National Park.

According to the weather forecast, rain is ongoing in southeastern Saskatchewan and parts of western Manitoba. The precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day into the evening before diminishing overnight. A previous overland flood warning was issued for sections of western Manitoba at the end of June.

Communities in western Manitoba, such as Dauphin, Minitonas, and Swan River, were severely impacted by heavy storms and flooding earlier this year. Several municipalities have declared local states of emergency due to flooding and storm-related issues in 2026.

In Winnipeg, Environment Canada’s afternoon forecast for Friday indicated periods of rain starting around midnight Saturday and persisting through the morning. The situation remains monitored as the heavy rainfall poses potential risks to the affected areas.
