Health experts are raising concerns about a potential surge in flu-related deaths this winter, prompting NHS leaders to issue a critical “SOS” alert advising the public to prioritize getting vaccinated. According to estimates from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), flu-related deaths in England rose to 7,757 last winter compared to 3,555 the previous year, with child fatalities increasing from 34 to 53. Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive, emphasized the impending challenges for healthcare staff, including addressing upcoming resident doctor strikes.
In response to the looming threat, the NHS is urging individuals to safeguard themselves by receiving flu vaccinations before the onset of winter. Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, underscored the importance of vaccination as a key preventive measure against flu transmission. Eligible individuals for NHS flu shots are encouraged to schedule their appointments promptly, while those not eligible can opt for a paid vaccination service available at various pharmacies like Boots, Tesco, Superdrug, and Well Pharmacy.
Emphasizing the timing of vaccination for optimal protection, Claire highlighted that autumn is the ideal period to receive the flu jab before the virus begins circulating widely. Following vaccination, it typically takes 10 to 14 days to develop immunity. Addressing common concerns, Claire reassured that flu vaccinations do not cause flu, with potential mild side effects such as temporary discomfort at the injection site, elevated temperature, or muscle aches lasting briefly.
As with any vaccine, mild reactions are normal post-vaccination, reflecting the body’s immune response. Claire advised individuals to manage any discomfort by considering appropriate remedies like paracetamol, staying hydrated, and getting adequate rest. Stressing the necessity of annual flu vaccinations due to changing virus strains and waning immunity, Claire recommended proactive vaccination to mitigate the risk of flu transmission and protect oneself and others during the winter season.
