“Nestlé’s Secret: Nescafé Frothy Coffees Made in Cumbria”

Date:

Nescafé’s frothy coffees, whether it’s a classic cappuccino or a caramel latte, are well-loved by many, but not everyone knows that they are produced in Cumbria, just across the border. Nestlé established a factory in Dalston near Carlisle back in 1962, initially focusing on powdered and condensed milk production. In 1992, they expanded to include cappuccino mixes and later started manufacturing a wide variety of Nescafé frothy coffees and Coffee Mate in 2018.

The milk used in these coffees is sourced locally from Dolphenby Farm, located just 20 miles away. Jonny Slack, a 36-year-old manager at Dolphenby alongside Robert Craig, emphasizes the significance of Nestlé being a global corporation but also a local employer. Jonny’s journey began at 16 as a cowman, gradually progressing to becoming a stakeholder at Dolphenby, where he now resides with his family.

Dolphenby Farm is part of First Milk, a British farmer-owned dairy co-operative that holds B Corp certification, signifying high standards in performance, accountability, and transparency. This certification underscores their commitment to sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and ethical business practices. At Dolphenby, their farming approach prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers, aligning with the evolving agricultural landscape.

Robert highlights the mutually beneficial relationship between First Milk and Nestlé, which has positively impacted the farm for over two decades. This partnership has facilitated a transition towards regenerative practices, with Nestlé supporting the farm’s sustainable evolution. Beyond financial assistance, Nestlé’s focus on the human aspect within its supply chains ensures a supportive environment for all involved.

Reflecting on his farming heritage, Robert shares his family’s farming legacy spanning generations. Originating from Sussex, his family relocated to Cumbria post-World War II, evolving from a small operation to a sizable farm with multiple sites and numerous contributors.
