Initially introduced in 1935 as Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp, this beloved treat has been manufactured in the historic city ever since. Today, owned by Nestlé, the York factory remains the hub of KitKat production, catering not only to the UK market but also supplying to international markets.

Rob Jackson, a product and process specialist at Nestlé focusing on KitKat, embodies the dream of many by being directly involved in the production of one of the UK’s favorite chocolate bars.

Rob, who ventured into the confectionery world eight years ago with a background in forensic anthropology and teaching experience, seized the opportunity to work in a practical industrial setting at Nestlé’s global confectionery Research and Development center in York. Over the years, he has transitioned through various departments within Nestlé, including the lab, healthy snacking, and KitKat team in the Product Technology Centre, before landing his current diverse role in the factory.

Constantly engaged in refining and enhancing KitKat, Rob and his team are always exploring new ingredients, recipe adjustments, manufacturing process optimizations, and implementing modern technologies to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiencies. Sustainability is a key focus for Rob, as he actively works towards reducing carbon footprints in their processes and supply chain.

Maintaining the high standards of a well-loved product like KitKat involves an in-house team of expert tasters trained to discern subtle differences objectively and scientifically. This feedback is crucial in understanding consumer preferences and steering product decisions in the right direction.
