Local officials are set to emphasize the need for consistent funding and increased support in addressing pressing issues like homelessness and deteriorating infrastructure.
The event gathers representatives from urban centers, municipalities, and rural areas to engage in policy discussions and hold direct meetings with provincial ministers. The conference, taking place at Ottawa’s Rogers Centre from Sunday to Wednesday, will feature a keynote address by Premier Doug Ford on Monday morning.
This year’s AMO conference spotlights the mounting challenges municipalities encounter in delivering services and enhancing infrastructure. Outgoing AMO president Robin Jones stressed the necessity for sustained funding for housing and economic development. Moreover, Jones emphasized the importance of receiving full provincial funding for health and social services, which are within the provincial jurisdiction.
Municipalities have faced significant financial burdens in recent years, with many expenses transferred to them and primarily reliant on property taxes for funding. AMO projects a requirement of over $250 billion in infrastructure investments over the coming decade to accommodate growth, address climate change, and maintain existing roads, water systems, and other essential assets statewide.
Delegates are advocating for increased provincial funding earmarked for community housing, mental health services, and addiction support, estimating an $11 billion need over the next ten years to combat chronic homelessness. The conference coincides with an election year, introducing a political element as mayors and councilors engage with the public and gear up for the upcoming elections in October.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is slated to deliver a speech to delegates on Monday morning, preceding Premier Ford’s address. Additionally, Jones, transitioning leadership to Ottawa Coun. Riley Brockington, will also deliver remarks during the event.
