“Multiple MPs Resign, Eighth Federal Byelection Announced”

Voters will participate in an eighth federal byelection between August 31 and mid-April following the resignation of Ontario Conservative MP Larry Brock. Brock, who won the seat in 2021 for Brantford–Brant South, will leave his position to work at the Crown attorney’s office in Brantford, Ontario. This marks the third Conservative MP departure this summer, with Saskatchewan MP Cathay Wagantall and Quebec’s Richard Martel also stepping down. Martel’s Chicoutimi–Le Fjord riding, along with North Vancouver–Capilano and Beaches–East York, will hold byelections to fill the vacant seats. The North Vancouver–Capilano and Beaches–East York races aim to replace former Liberal cabinet ministers Jonathan Wilkinson and Nate Erskine-Smith, who pursued other opportunities. Additionally, Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay resigned to run in the upcoming Quebec election, leaving his Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton seat empty. Prime Minister’s byelection call window ranges from 11 to 180 days after a seat becomes vacant, with campaigns lasting 36 to 50 days. Current Independent and former NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice is transitioning to provincial politics, while former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault is set to resign as an MP on August 28. Larry Brock will officially step down on September 18, just before the House of Commons reconvenes on September 21.
