“Mercedes Urged to Extend Contract for Rising Star Antonelli”

Date:

Mercedes has been advised to finalize a contract extension for Kimi Antonelli despite the young driver’s ongoing challenges. Antonelli, an 18-year-old Italian, had an exceptional debut in Formula 1 by finishing fourth at the rain-soaked Australian Grand Prix.

Initially stepping in for Lewis Hamilton, who departed for Ferrari, Antonelli continued to impress with consecutive sixth-place finishes in China and Japan. Notably, he secured pole position for the Miami sprint race and clinched his first podium at the Canadian Grand Prix.

However, his standout performance in Montreal has been overshadowed by a recent slump in form during the European season. Struggling with a Mercedes car that has become more demanding to drive due to upgrades, Antonelli’s confidence has taken a hit.

Despite securing points by finishing ninth at Monza, Antonelli faced criticism from team principal Toto Wolff for a decline in race pace. Wolff acknowledged the underwhelming performance but reiterated his support for Antonelli’s promising future in Formula 1.

While Wolff confirmed contract extensions for both Antonelli and George Russell to race with Mercedes in 2026, the drivers have not yet signed new deals. Commentator David Croft suggested that Mercedes should expedite the process to provide reassurance and confidence to Antonelli, emphasizing his exceptional talent.

Formula 1 enthusiasts can catch all live sessions with Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, which also offers over 100 TV channels and complimentary subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.

Former champion Nico Rosberg highlighted Wolff’s change in approach towards Antonelli, indicating a potential strategy shift to support the young driver more calmly and privately. Rosberg emphasized Antonelli’s undeniable talent but acknowledged the unexpected challenges he has faced in his rookie season.
