In September 2012, Dan Markel, a dedicated father, Canadian-born lawyer, and law professor, was on a business trip. Returning home to Tallahassee, Florida, he was shocked to find his wife, Wendi, and their children gone, along with divorce papers on the bed, signaling the end of their six-year marriage.
Following their divorce in 2013, a custody agreement was established, preventing Wendi from moving to Miami, where her wealthy parents resided. The Adelson family, particularly Wendi’s mother, Donna, who managed a prosperous dentistry business, allegedly offered Dan $1 million for Wendi’s relocation.
Tragedy struck in July 2014 when Dan was fatally shot outside his home, leading investigators to suspect a connection to the custody battle. In 2016, three individuals, including Katherine Magbanua, Sigfredo Garcia, and Luis Rivera, were arrested in connection with the murder plot.
Further investigations linked the trio to Charles Adelson, Donna’s son, who was later found guilty in 2023 of orchestrating the murder. Subsequent trials revealed chilling details of the Adelson family’s involvement in the plot, culminating in Donna’s arrest in 2023 at an airport.
Donna Adelson was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation, portraying her as the mastermind behind the contract killing. Despite maintaining her innocence, she was sentenced to life in prison. The case, spanning over a decade, captivated the public due to its intricate and shocking narrative.
The conviction of Adelson marked the fifth person found guilty in Dan’s murder case, which has been a source of fascination for over a decade. Wendi and her father have not faced charges in connection to the crime.
