Marc-Antoine Dequoy Returns to Football for Olympics Shot

Date:

After just half a year into his retirement, Marc-Antoine Dequoy, aged 31, has returned to the football scene, this time competing for the Canadian men’s team at the IFAF World Flag Football Championship in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy had retired from the CFL in February after a successful five-season stint with the Montreal Alouettes, citing physical limitations that prevented him from committing to a full CFL season.

Initially hesitant about flag football, Dequoy was approached by Canadian head coach Paul LaPolice shortly after his retirement. After conducting research and trying out the sport, Dequoy found himself enjoying the new challenge and the opportunity to compete once again. Despite a hiatus from March to May to co-host a television show, Dequoy realized his passion for competition was still burning and decided to return to the field.

A CFL all-star and two-time Grey Cup participant, Dequoy acknowledged the differences in flag football, with its smaller field dimensions and non-contact rules for defensive players. Adapting to the new game, he found it challenging to break old habits of physical play and adjust to the nuances of flag-pulling techniques.

In a turn of events, Nigeria withdrew its men’s and women’s flag football teams due to visa issues, resulting in Canada playing fewer preliminary-round games in Germany. Nonetheless, Canada remains focused on securing a top-two finish to qualify for the Olympics, with the United States already guaranteed a spot as the host nation.

Dequoy expressed his excitement at the prospect of Olympic qualification through flag football, a dream he never imagined possible during his football career. The World Flag Football Championship serves as a crucial qualifying event for the Olympics, with teams aiming to secure a coveted spot in the prestigious sporting event.
