“Man finds multiple Canada geese carcasses, sparking conservation probe”

Date:

Manitoba Conservation is currently investigating an incident where a man, while operating a grader just north of Garson, Man., came across a collection of deceased Canada geese in a ditch. Scott Peluk, employed as a grader operator for the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead, encountered around 15 to 20 geese carcasses while working near Road 33 E. He noted that the geese appeared to be whole bodies rather than having been gutted for meat, expressing his concern over the discovery.

Although Peluk did not inspect the carcasses up close, he mentioned observing some with apparent “blood spots” on them. While it remains unconfirmed whether the geese were shot, Peluk speculated that if they were, it might have exceeded the legal limit for hunters to harvest in a single day. According to Manitoba’s 2026 hunting guide, licensed hunters within the province’s game bird hunting zones are permitted to harvest eight Canada geese per day and possess up to 24.

Raised in a rural setting, Peluk emphasized the importance of not wasting meat and shared a photo of the carcasses on social media, hoping that those responsible would be identified or refrain from such actions in the future. He stressed the value of utilizing all resources, especially in a time when food costs are high. Manitoba Conservation has since removed the carcasses, and in response to inquiries, stated that they are actively investigating the matter.
