A man, identified as Roshvin Crofton, has been taken into custody by Toronto police for his involvement in setting fire to multiple vehicles at the residence of a Scarborough MP last week. The charges against Crofton include arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable material, and failure to comply with a probation order. Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata, suspected to have ties to the incident, was confiscated, with authorities seeking information on its whereabouts before the alleged arson.
Toronto police are pursuing a second suspect in connection with the incident, which took place in Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s driveway. Zahid, representing the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal riding, expressed gratitude towards the authorities following Crofton’s arrest but stated that the motive behind the arson remains unknown. She emphasized the need for further investigation before making additional comments on the matter.
According to police reports, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, causing them to ignite, and fled the scene, resulting in fire damage to a third vehicle. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
Zahid, a Liberal Member of Parliament since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association. The investigation into the arson incident is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
