“Major Banks to Shut Down Branches Across UK High Streets”

Date:

Customers of various high street banks will soon witness the closure of numerous branches in the upcoming weeks as five major financial institutions have announced shutdowns. Notable industry players such as Lloyds, Halifax, and NatWest are among those eliminating in-person services from several high streets, with a total of 11 closures scheduled for this week.

NatWest patrons will bid farewell to branches in Abingdon, Birmingham, New Market, Willerby, and Yate within the week. Additionally, Halifax is set to shut down local branches in London Clapham Junction, Rhyl, Erdington, Cirencester, and Walkden, while the Lloyds branch in Leeds Armley will also cease operations.

The banking sector justifies these closures by pointing to the increasing reliance of customers on online and mobile banking apps, making the viability of maintaining physical branches more challenging. Despite this trend, many customers and small businesses still heavily depend on their local branches for everyday financial transactions.

Over 6,400 bank and building society branches have closed since 2015, averaging 53 closures per month, as reported by Which? Deputy editor Sam Richardson characterized this trend as a “seismic shift” in the operations of UK banks.

In case your bank is among those closing branches, alternative options exist such as utilizing Post Office branches for basic banking needs. With 11,684 branches nationwide, the Post Office remains a prevalent presence in most towns and cities. Moreover, some regions benefit from mobile banking services, deploying buses equipped with full banking functionalities to areas lacking physical branch access.

To locate your nearest Post Office branch, visit postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder, and for details on mobile banking services, contact your bank directly.
