Labour MP Urges Funding Boost for Special Education Reforms

Date:

Rachel Reeves has been cautioned that necessary changes to special educational needs and disabilities will require financial investment. Labour MP Helen Hayes, the chair of the Education Select Committee, emphasized to Ms. Reeves that addressing the issues in the current system would not be cost-free. Hayes stressed the importance of allocating “transformation funding” in the upcoming Budget to support the required reforms.

The release of the Schools white paper, which includes plans to revamp the SEND program, has been postponed until next year, delaying its initial schedule for this Autumn. This delay coincides with the Chancellor’s impending Budget announcement on November 26, which is anticipated to involve tax hikes and spending reductions.

In an interview with The Mirror, Ms. Hayes highlighted that saving money in the SEND sector is not feasible and could exacerbate the existing challenges. She emphasized the necessity for the government to secure transformation funding for a more stable system. Hayes also underscored the significance of enhancing teacher skills, increasing pay, and improving school infrastructure to better accommodate students with disabilities.

The Education Select Committee proposed reforms in a recent report, advocating for a significant shift in how SEND is integrated into mainstream schools. Ms. Hayes acknowledged the government’s focus on inclusivity in mainstream education but reiterated that achieving this goal would require financial investments.

Responding to the concerns, a Department for Education spokesperson acknowledged the need for reform in the SEND system and reassured ongoing efforts to enhance support for children with special needs. The spokesperson highlighted the government’s commitment to investing additional funds to improve the system and create more specialized school placements to ensure every child’s success and well-being.
